Watch a robot competiton!

Postby jtaylor » 19 Mar 2010, 06:49

I am broadcasting the FIRST Midwest Regional robotics competition live on Ustream. You can watch it here. It will be live until around 4:30pm GMT-5 today (Friday March 19th) and from 9:30am to 4:30 pm tomorrow (Saturday March 20th).
"The FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC) stages short games played by autonomous and remote controlled robots. The robots are designed and built in 6 weeks (from of a common set of parts) by a team of 15 to 25 high-school-aged young people and a handful of engineers-mentors. The students remotely control the robots in competition rounds on the field. Each school year, teams are formed in the fall. The FIRST Robotics Competition Kickoff in early January starts the six-week "build" season. Competitions take place in March and April. This year's game is called 'Breakaway'. Two alliances of three teams each compete on a 27' x 54' field with bumps attempting to earn points by collecting soccer balls in their goals. Additional bonus points are earned for each robot not touching the field at the end of the match."

I participated in FIRST Robotics last year and the year before. It's much fun. My team was one of the three that won the OKC regional last year. We even made it past the qualifiying rounds rounds at the Atlanta national championship. Unfortunately, that's where we fell off, but it was still a helluva lot of fun.

Aside from Mr.Ballsmatron, has LRR done a skit with any other robots?

I'm in FIRST, it is a lot of fun, but also a lot of work. I spent a few meetings doing nothing but CADing various parts of the bot, but I also spent a few playing StarCraft.

These competitions were always fun to watch on PBS when I was growing up. Good luck!
