Teach Me(et all) Your Religion!

Postby theDreamer » 03 May 2010, 13:38

This is pretty self explanatory.

I love learning about religions, despite not being religious myself.

Please note, that if you post here, I will almost assuredly argue with you.

This is not meant to be insulting, but simply a tool to help me iron out any misconceptions I have.

Anyone is welcome to post, but no trolling or flaming, else I will be sad.

I also ask for "your religion." This means the one you were raised into, even if you've since rejected it.

Also, if anyone's curious about Judaism, I happen to know a lot about it. Since I used to be super Jew.

HAVE AT IT.
I can put my hands in my head, and I can laugh it in the face.

Was roman catholic, was thrown out of sunday school at 7 years old for saying that I didn't think god would like us or like anything, have not been back since and am now phobic of churches. I am now an agnostic working on my own personal philosophy. That's all for now. Ta.

Apologies if this sounds crass, but I heard this rumour about incredibly Orthodox Jews:

Some of them only have sex if the other person is covered by a sheet with a hole in it.

True or false?

I haven't heard this one before.

I assume it stems from the fact that Orthodox Jews are not allowed to touch anyone of the opposite gender who is not a relative (possibly blood + wife only, but I'm not sure about that. I think a man can hug his sister-in-law, but I'm not sure).

I assumed it was one of those sex = taboo sentiments that come attached to some religions. Something about sex (or the female form) being unclean or something.

It sounded just crazy enough to be true.

When I was younger my Judaism was an identifying factor in my life.

I might have felt like an outsider, but I always had my religion.

Then as I grew I began to see that I couldn't actually reconcile the what the Religion claims to be, and what I observed of the world.

You know how some people have something shitty happen to them and turn to God, and others in the exact same situation turn away? In the end, I was the latter.

Protestant Christian, non-denominational right now. My last church was Brethren (though a somewhat liberal strain of that), before that Baptist, Menno, Alliance, Baptist again.

Atheist.

I do not reject the idea that someone, someday, may produce proof of God's existence(and prove me wrong), but presently I do not believe such a god does exist.

Not much really. To be honest I couldn't tell you the specific theological differences between each of them. As I've come to realize the primary difference between one church and another is (generally) the makeup of the congregation and its leadership from pastor to deacons and elders.

A common thread for most modern churches, as I realized somewhat recently, is the Apostle's Creed. Good place to start.

I was baptised and raised as a Roman Catholic, but something about the dogmatic dirge of a sunday mass never quite did it for me. It was all very... heavy. I dunno, I just didn't buy into it. Went to C of E schools and that did little to further my belief in Christianity, but did introduce me to some devout whackjob teachers who (as one example) told us to draw what we thought god looked like, and then punished one girl for drawing nothing as she didn't believe in God.
And, in my spiritual bumbling, I found the ideas of paganism, wicca and other spiritualistic faiths. I stuck to Wicca for a while, but after a while questions were raised that it couldn't answer, so now I'm ecclectically building a personal philosophy, but it seems to be working so far. Any questions?

Born Roman Catholic, raised Southern Baptist, have most recently attended Methodist churches.

Do any of those labels actually fit what I believe? No, not at all.

Religion and faith are entirely separate things.

I was raised Roman Catholic, spent 3.5 years studying in a seminary (grades 8 through halfway through 11).

Currently I'm some variation of agnostic. I have a hard time considering the existence or inexistence of god to be likely. I find that most athiestic debates end up with "well I just don't believe it" and most deistic debates end up at "well I take it on faith".

Based on the above, I take a firm stance of "We don't know, and there's no way we COULD know". I would be happy to have myself proven wrong on this at some point, but I don't expect it.

I deny your proof. On basis of flawed premises.

1. she's not really that attractive.

2. assuming she were that attractive, she's still not dating me.

Baptised without my consent when I was a baby and was never confirmed being a catholic* when I was whatever age you have to be so I get out of being called a Catholic despite what anyone says. I'm no more a catholic at birth than I was Postman Pat.

Had to attend catholic school and made to join all the sermons and go to confession even though I flatly told them I don't have to attend because it is voluntary not mandatory, which they still made me attend. Because of the laws here the school had to accept a proportion of non-catholics if there were open spaces and adhere to their needs, which they didn't, boy did they get a storm from me through the years.

*not sure what confirmation truly was, probably being buggered in the apse.
