Right, we need to go the Moon
The moonbase MkIII may be up there, or under there... whatever. But I consider the LRR crew comedic demi-gods and there for we need to get human feet on Lunar soil. In a colony.
So I came up with a plan, you only need to browse these forums for a while before you find really talented people. So, engineers, graphics artists, physisists, chemists and biologists. Rise up to the challnege.
With a little research of my own I think that taking a space plane up to the edge of the atmosphere piggy backing on a jet would be the cheapest way to get to the moon, but we would need a space port on the moon.
There the colony could begin, to make it finaically viable there is a huge amount of He3 on the near side of the moon, what could be a key ingerident of nuclear fusion. My personal thought was to make inflatable domes the main kind of building but what do you think?

Hello good sir!
Although I am of no use to you since I am poorly educated at this point in time, I say good on yer man, for thinking of something others could only dream of, but it would take years, or even decades of research to get everything worked out, so maybe wait afew more years when technology has evolved enough so we can achieve this great feat!

Re: Right, we need to go the Moon
This is an endeavour I would like to see happen. Humans need to reach the moon so that it can be used as a stepping off point to reach out for the other planets.
However I am only a video editor... so if you need training materials, or spiffy adverts, or a nice newscast made after the fact, give me a call... Actually helping you get to the moon... you might need to ask someone else. (Unless you want to whip out the green screen, but that really doesn't have the same effect.)

Re: Right, we need to go the Moon
Au contraire! Moonbase, MkIII will require people from all walks of life; video editing skills will be required for all manner of communications - the ones you've mentioned, as well as 'pitch' videos to secure funding and capital.
And yes, we've been there previously, so the only real unknown is establishing mining and habitation facilities on an airless planetoid. Said endeavors will require substantial basic, unadulterated hard work and labor, but remember - it's all for a good cause: Child's Play. After we secure a monopoly interest in extra-planetary mining, we'll be able to donate unprecedented amounts to that charity!

Re: Right, we need to go the Moon
so, we're planning a ruthless and risky endeavour to secure exclusive access to a resource which will make lots of money. We will force out other competitors and deny competitors access to the resource, thus driving up the price through a monopoly and making us even more money. For the children.
I think we could make anything sound good by simply adding 'for the children' onto the end.
Let's try it.
I'm going to rob a bank... for the children
I'm going to defraud thousands in an elaborate email scam... for the children.
I'm going to siphon off government funds from vital services... for the children.
I'm going to start a communist revolution in a third world country... for the children.
I'm going to hire a hooker... for the children
I'm going to get drunk and vandalise a public place... for the children.
works.

Re: Right, we need to go the Moon
Whoa-ho-ho; hold on there, tex. Who said anything about "force out competitors and deny competitors access"?
If someone else decided to go through the extensive expenditure of time, money, effort and research and also set up shop on Luna to gather and bring back materials, more power to them. We'd have an advantage of being first, in both getting the best site(s), and by already establishing markets and customers before they've begun, but the nascent industry would still have plenty of room for competition (I imagine demand for what we would offer would easily outstrip any level of production a single company could provide).
So here's a rope; come on back up from that slippery slope, smarty pants.

I think I have a few tonnes of LOX knocking around under the sofa, if you need some fuel.
I also have a washing machine which we could use for the on-board computers.

The reasoning has a few gaps, but I'm willing to let it slide.

Re: Right, we need to go the Moon
I remember reading a while back that the most feasible method of establishing a lunar colony would be to use the theorized natural caves/tunnels under the moon's surface. It would be much more cost-effective to take an existing cave and seal it off than to manufacture a containment unit the size of a city.

Perhaps, but not if the rock turns out to be really porous and the caves remarkable extensive. Anyway, wouldn't living on the moon be rather bad for human physiology?

not with extensive excersise programs.
Or we could have a spinning habitation wheel. Mining for fusion fuel is not the only reason for going to the Moon. Micro-gravity research is also important, it could be the key to carbon nano tubes and superfine crystalline structures with multiple applications.
For alternative types of structures, you could also scoop out permafrost regoliths

Eh. Omniverse has already been there and done that.

I think a standard TI-83 graphics calculator could also work and I'm fairly sure I have one laying around that I haven't used in years.

The children are our properties, too!
Re: Right, we need to go the Moon
can I be your property *clicks tongue*
but seriously,
I saw we use 3 ps3s. pre-"anti-OS" update and install linux on it!
Then when we get to the moon, we install linux on THAT. Then we'll have a server with storage space to rival google!
First the moon, then the universe!

Re: Right, we need to go the Moon
Ya know, a part of me really wants this to actually pan out.
It's lonely out here. The sooner humanity wanders into the greater universe, the sooner I'll have neighbors. Plus, I might even be able to mediate trade negotiations. I mean, widespread adaptation of solar arrays even HALF as good as the tech I personally employ? It could spark a second Green Revolution.
That said, another part of me quietly sighs and remarks dejectedly that I should know better - that even if I live to be two hundred and fifty, humanity still won't change. I try not to listen, but... firsthand study of history does seem to suggest that as a fair liklihood.

given that this is all for their benefit, perhaps the children should provide it?
