Re: The General Chat thread

Okay, I couldn't think of where else to put this, so I figure it could go here.

With my Craft-Along being shipped out tomorrow, my mind has been on Desert Bus.
When I saw this week's XKCD What If, I couldn't help but wonder:
How long would Desert Bus go if someone donated all the money in the world?

If my math is right (and the estimate of $4 trillion is right)... it would be 16 days and 5 hours.

Who wants to help with this?

I know I'd previously calculated that to have Desert Bus running constantly (ie each year's run finishes just in time for the next year to begin) would require about 10^244 times the GDP of the entire world to be funnelled into the charity...

So... picture every atom in the universe was itself an entire universe. And that every atom in those sub-universes was itself an entire universe. And every atom in those sub-sub-universes was a planet with an economy of the same size as the Earth. If you were to collect all of the GDP of every single one of those many many Earths and gather it all together... it would be about a ten-thousandth of the amount of money you'd need for Operation Infinite Bus.

Oh hey, if there are any LRRunners around London at the end of September, I'm going to EGX, I'll be at the expo Saturday and Sunday, but I might go down to London on Thursday night or Friday morning if I can sort out a hotel room.

Catch me around and I'll buy you a drink, show you a magic trick or something. PM me for my phone number if you're around.

EGX is at Earl's court. I have only a vague idea about the size of London despite having been there a few times, but I imagine I should be able to handle going anywhere on the London Underground without my head catching fire.

Edit: And my hotel Saturday night (27th) is at Clapham Junction, I'm going to try to book there Friday and possibly Thursday (26th, 25th).

Edit2: Ok, I've booked Friday night, but Thursday would have been £122. If anyone can offer me a sofa on Thursday for, say, £50 I'll come down Thursday, if not, Friday. I'll leave it a few days before I book the train tickets.

So I've just come back from holiday perhaps more miserable than when I left. And I didn't exactly leave on sunny terms.

I lost 40€ (Not sure if I was pick-pocketed or it fell out of my pocket), got sunburt all on my arms, got aching limbs (although to be fair, I wanted to do a lot of walking, so I can't really complain), didn't sleep very well, and remembered why I really dislike spending time with my dad with his childish behaviour, not exactly PC attitudes, and obvious alcoholism.

Sometimes I wonder if there's any point of me attempting to enjoy myself, since whenever I try to, things just don't go my way. Perhaps I'm just a terrible person without knowing it, and that's why good things never seem to happen to me.

But then again, I turn on the news and see all the depressing things that are happening right now and then I realise that I may think I have it bad, but there are a hell of a lot of people that have it a lot worse then me.

So every silver lining I guess.

While it's important to keep perspective, it's equally important to understand that, just because worse things are happening, it doesn't mean that your problems are in some way canceled out by unrelated issues.

True, but my problems are an inconvenience at worse, not something that deeply affects the way I live.

...does anyone else have a favourite type of pen? I just got sad that I had to fill out my timesheet with a ballpoint instead of a rollerball.

I like the look of Quill pens and ink pens, that classical feel just gets to me.

Not necessarily a specific brand or type, but I do demand that the ink be nice and dark. Can't stand lightly colored ink of any shade.

I'm glad these two blondish-brown haired middle-agedish young male characters in Pacific Rim have different coloured shirts and accents. I was having difficulty telling them apart.

Quick side question (didn't where else to put it): Kathleen has been listening to a sciency/trivia podcast which she often mentions during the LRRcast. Does anyone know what podcast this is? I am in need of distracting sound and knowledge.
