Nerd Moments

Postby Intellectually funky » 14 Aug 2009, 14:05

Today I was helping my dad cast off so he can go fishing and we have a boat lift that goes over our head, As I stepped from the boat to the Dock a medium sized crab falls on my head. After seeing it hit the ground the first thing I thought was HEADCRAB!! and for some reason I started laughing.

So I wanted to ask about my fellow LRRinite's about your incidents in nerdery.

When I had my old flip cellphone I would make the Star Trek communicator noise when I flipped it open every now and then.

Wednesday we had show and tell at work for fun. I showed off my character sheet for Balin Backwater, my AD&D Level 2 Dwarf Fighter.

I constantly make reference to my "character sheet"

Feats I have, skills I'm trained in, my attributes, etc. etc.
I can put my hands in my head, and I can laugh it in the face.

Not even 30 minutes ago, I was leaving a friend of mine's apartment with that friend and one more to go up to mine (same building). We were carrying things so elected to take the elevator. Since we were on the 5th floor and headed to the 7th, two of us went ahead to call the elevator while the other locked up.

The elevator was already there, so we got in and just stood there like we would if the elevator was moving until the other person caught up. My first thought was "damn it, I feel like an NPC".

You should have quoted some Half-Life 2 NPC dialogue :P

I don't think there's a week that goes by that I don't make at least one, "Guess I failed my [insert skill here] check!" Sometimes they don't even have to be skills. It could be "sleep check" or "eat check".

There was another time that I was convinced that Life Day was an actual holiday. My friends had to remind me that it's from Star Wars, and not reality. (and from the Star Wars Holiday Special, too)

I squealed like a little girl when I got my G-Saviour Soundtrack. But seriously I have a nerd moment like every 5 minutes.

We're out of food:

Hey mum: Additional supply depots required!

I see the fuel meter running low:

We require more Vespene gas!

All in my best impression of the voices.

I would've, but I had to explain what an NPC was to begin with.

Also, the reason I was down at my friend's apartment was to help him organize his furniture. In asking me for help he phrased his question as such: "Were you any good at Diablo? I have a lot of square stuff I need to fit into a rectangular room" (joking about the inventory system).

Ah, I just remembered something specific.
I had gone for about two or three days without food (cause I was in college and broke) Some of my friends had gone away for the weekend and when we were all talking and talked about getting dinner my response:
Blue Valkyrie needs food badly!

...see, I was wearing blue at the time.

I occasionally say "Blue Mage needs food badly!" when I'm really hungry

+1

I once managed to side-track my English teacher into spending half a class discussing Diablo. This was after we finished debating macs vs. pc.

The next day he told us where to get weed in Halifax.

That was a good class, really.

Me and some non geeky friends were at the store, and loading groceries into the truck of my car. Eddy says to me, "Chris. Why do you have toy lightsabers in your trunk?" And without missing a beat or even acting embarrassed, I replied, "For lightsaber fights. Duh."
Wil Wheaton says "Game over, Moonpie."

I often say "WE MUST CONSTRUCT ADDITIONAL PYLONS" or "WE REQUIRE MORE VESPENE GAS" when I need more of something. Most of my friends get it and know what I need, which is awesome. My friends are rad nerds.

"Evil Jim needs food, badly!"

It's fun to do but you really need the right audience within earshot. (Yes, I know I'm among my kind here but I'm talking about while being seated at the Olive Garden.) Also, giving it the right voice multiplies the awesome exponentially.

Is this a D&D reference?

I'm not a gamer so my nerd moments tend to centre more around anime, music and academic stuff. If I see a something cutsie I will say "cue the sparklies" and I can be listening to the radio and all of a sudden yell out "OMG, this song is in 5/4 time, I love 5/4 time!" In my house, we don't pass the salt, we pass the NaCl. And we don't put sugar in our tea, we put sucrose.
