the 360 has a history of extraordinary hardware failure (at one point was was reported to be around a 33% failure rate) however just b4 Christmas Microsoft released the "jasper" xbox 360, looks like they are trying to lower the heat off of the GPU (shrank it to 65nm from the previous 90nm). http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/10/insi ... al-consol/ read up on it, see if it's something your find interesting, if you think it's good, go for it, I don't have Jasper nor have I heard from anyone who has it so I don't know what it's like, but with the heat reduction I'd assume this would go a long way to reduce problems with the 360. this article also shows you how to identify a Jasper unit.

On the topic of hardware failures: I've had the same 360 since the day it was released, and have yet to see any problems with it.
Personally, I support purchasing one. It's not without its flaws, but it's the best of the current crop. The Wii lacks games for the hardcore crowd (actually, not just hardcore crowd; most people for whom it's not their first console will likely find it lacking). Then there's the PS3, and while it's starting to find its legs and get some decent games (Little Big Planet, mainly), it's still the most expensive, and has a smaller library than the 360. Might be worth looking into in the future, but not right now.
So, yeah: 360 ftw.

Actually, for $300 you could probably get the LRR crew to do some pretty goofy stuff during Desert Bus for Hope 3.

I would absolutely get a 360. See if you can track down one of the newer "Jasper" units (I haven't had my coffee yet so you'll have to Google around for how to find that out - but there is a way) that shouldn't have the same grade of hardware failures.
That said, my launch 360 is still going strong. The disc drive is a little noisy, but ever since the New XBox Experiene and install to hard drive, that has been a non-issue.

You check the Amperage, 14.3 is Falcon, 12.1 is Jasper. There should be a hole in a corner of the box that you can see a sticker through, and it will be in the corner of that sticker, you should just be able to see it.

iEatNinjaZ wrote:okay so next question. spend it all on a pro.
or just 200 on an arcade and buy some games and a component to vga adapter so i can play on my computer monitor
Spend. It. All. On. A. Pro.
The Pro bundle is what the 360 actually is. Install to Hard Drive is really, really useful. DLC is a lot of fun (especially for retro gaming). If your monitor has a DVI in, you might be able to use an HDMI->DVI cable to hitch it up to your monitor anyway. I have a couple of DVI sources playing to HDMI monitors (Televisions), but I have NOT tried it the other way around...I would expect there's a fairly good chance it would work, though.

So, I've had my 360 for about...what, a month and a half now? I love it. Only reason I'm a bit pissed off, I got horribly screwed over. Whatever you do,
GET THE PRO.
Do NOT get the arcade as it lacks:
Arg though, it's frustrating to have songs available on World Tour and not be able to download them due to lack of space. >.>
Also, paying for the Live service is annoying as plus the headset mic, it's $100-110 here. (Blasted MS points aren't cheap either.)
Curse you Microsoft and you're, 'bleed them dry through accessories' plan!
.....So, um, yeah. Go the Pro, save you lots of money. Brilliant console otherwise, haven't had so much as a hiccup so far and it plays my (WHOA 2!??!) games to the standard I want. ^.^[/list]
Edit: Upon reading, as apparently I've become illiterate, I must say good choice. Let's just put those arguments in the "Yeah, uh, I was SUPPORTING you decision from the get go...." category.

- The HDMI port...which I later realised is useful for attaching to computer monitors....*Slight rage*
It doesn't have backwards compatibility to the Xbox which I will admit is not a big deal for me, but still...no Halo 2 for my console, just the PC whenever I end up getting it.
By FAR the biggest missing feature though is that DAMNED Harddrive. If I'd realised how much money I woulda saved by getting the 60gb instead of this damned memory card, I woulda forked out the extra (at the time) $120 or something. Now I gotta buy either a 20gb for $50 or a 120gb for $150. (Looking into USB options atm for cheaper.)
