Resident Evil 5

Postby Elomin Sha » 12 Mar 2009, 17:45

Got my copy at midnight, plays much like RE4. Very very intense on veteran, does creep you out when everyone just turns and stares at you when you walk by. I've played it for an hour and can't survive long enough for help to arrive because of a guy with an axe.

Add more when I've played for longer.

ZOMG KILLING BLACK PEOPLE?!?!?!

Resident Evil 4 had you massacring Spanish people and no-one gave a f**k, people are dumb. The demo's insanely fun though.

i'm a fair ways in and i'm enjoying the ride immensely. occasionally i wonder if i'm playing GoW2 (you'll see) and some bits can be slightly repetitive, but that's RE all over. the story is decent, but the dialogue is shocking; again an RE staple. they've designed the game for 2-player co-op and sometimes this is blatantly obvious when you're playing with the AI (ie the first boss). and while the AI is pretty okay, she'll quite often waste precious ammo and NEVER covers your back. obviously the game would be much more fun with two human players as it was intended, but they shouldn't make your life hard if not. i really miss the shady merchant from RE4, but at least you get the chance to buy and sell items like before. the thing is, money is scarce (and i've found everything valuable so far), and kitting out two players on a few collected jewels and gold bars is tough. i'm not sure how this works with 2-player, but i can imagine if the money isn't shared there will be fights for collectibles, and if it is there will be fights for what to spend it on. there are a few new types of enemies and some familiars from previous games, and of course all the guns are old friends. one major gripe i have with the game is the abundance of button prompts during cut scenes and places where it's just stupid and annoying. this especially sucks when you take a drink or something during a cut scene and have to scramble for the controller. a few cheesy rip-offs, but this is an awesome game thus far.

It is worth getting, I'm not online but I'm enjoying the single player a lot. Finally got passed the compound by legging it. Lots of bad guy designs which is nice. It does make me fear what's around the next corner.

My first midnight opening was a bit bland. I turned up an hour early but there was no one there. Not much of a gaming culture where I am, so I spent my time watching LRR, wouldn't have it any other way. First one there, first one to get a copy.

I immensely disliked the control style in the demo (360). Keeping in mind I never played RE4, will I still like this game? Do you get used to the control style?

you get used to the control scheme. it's fundamentally the same as the old controls, with some slight tweaks and a camera angle that makes it more intuitive than it used to be. so if you could play the old RE's you could play the new ones.

Played the demo, wasn't impressed. I'll wait till this game ends up being cheaper before i get it. I prefered old RE when it was a true survival horror game, not a shoot em up.

Technically RE isn't a survival horror because you're not really surviving, you're just running from A to B.

to be honest it's really quite short. it will only take you a day or two to complete if you've played any of the older ones. it's a fun ride, and there are some extra options for some replay value once you're finished, but perhaps just hire it for now and wait until the price drops.

played it with a friend today and I think this game's awesome

a bit short though, and whatever survival horror it used to have is gone now, it's pretty much an action game now

my suggestion is just go rent it, not worth 70 bucks

I'm thoroughly enjoying the game.

I don't what you guys are saying that it "isn't survival horror". I'm pretty horrified. And trying to survive. Seems like it's right on the money to me.

Sure there's more action elements, but the old game didn't have that because the old systems couldn't handle it. I think the new RE games (4+5) marry action and horror very well. Frankly, if they tried to make the games control the same, people would be in uproar.

Sure, it's short. But there's a lot of replay there. You can "New Game +" for example, and keep all your weapons (and then get more money and upgrade them further). If you're on the 360 there's tons of achievements to get. And playing co-op is a blast.

Verdict: Totally Worth the Cost

Aside--
What made the old RE titles "survival horror" that this game "isn't"?

Things Old RE Games Had That This One Also Has
Dark Atmosphere: Tons of it.
Zombies: Essentially, yes.
Zombie Dogs: Goddamn it, Africa has hyenas.
Big Scary Mutation Monsters: Several.
Elaborate Set-Piece Action Moments: Yup.
The Collection of a Variety of Arbitrary Crests etc to Open Doors: This also.
Item Management: Fuck You I Want a Bigger Backpack.
Wesker: Spoilers, he's in it.
Excellent Music: Makes me scared.
...and so on.

Folks... this is the evolution of survival horror. Don't write it off as some shitty action game with the RE name tacked on it.

I imagine lots of "Yahtzee is wrong" when he makes his review of this, which he's bound too. Mind you, you've all most managed to convince me to get RE5 without having played any of the others. F.E.A.R 2 was such a huge letdown horror-wise, maybe RE5 will fill the gap?

*Minor Spoilers?*

Went on a huge Coop spree with a friend for about 11 hours straight without caffeine/sugar or anything of the sort, while I do agree it's become more action orient the first few hours were spent pretty non horrified there were a few moments involving those stupid head splitting zombie dogs.

Then came the cave I being the overly straight forward told my buddy to screw the lantern were going in without light.....then we remembered what Las Plagas does without daylight several horrifying moments were had. Not to mention those stupid 100 foot jumping tribal zombies with spears, when they first jumped up to reach me after I thought I was safe I admit I yelled out.

Along with the whole oh shit Wesker is chasing us down fight and he's Neo.

Sure the game is a bit short but it is a really awesome game the "horror" aspect is still there and when you go into the city square I'm sure you have to "survive" until help arrives.

Rent it if you don't want to spend 60+ dollars on it right away but try to pick it up and for the love of god play it Coop with a friend, you'll thank yourself that you did.

Sidenote during the whole sunbeam and mirrors puzzle on the final puzzle me and my friend ended up having a sun laser mirror fight which lasted about 10 rounds after he killed me by turning one of the mirrors and frying me.

This game is amazing, its the most fun I have had in a co-op game for sometime there seems to be a lot less weapons than RE4 but thats not a bad thing really.

i'm playing through on new game+ and it's so damn easy with my souped up guns. i miss being so afraid of the chainsaw men. the only time i falter is those stupid button prompts; the SNES has ruined me for the xbox. i still think if you don't have a steady friend to play with whenever you want it's probably not worth the hefty price right now. if you're waiting for it to drop, go hire the bastard. killer ride.
also, first unlockable costumes are fucking weird/hilarious. capcom, you crazy bastards.

Joshua wrote:This game is amazing, its the most fun I have had in a co-op game for sometime there seems to be a lot less weapons than RE4 but thats not a bad thing really.

did you unlock them all? there are quite a few, and some hidden ones. obviously with the new inventory system you need to have a smaller range of weapons or you'll find yourself without room for ammo and herbs.

were you as disappointed as i was with the wasted potential there? those puzzles were ridiculously basic. still, the idea is great.

Just beat it, I loved it so much, the only problem I had is that a certain brown haired person had blond hair it bugged me slightly. And you try to tell me this game isn't survival horror when fighting the main antagonist all I was doing is surviving....well that and treasure hunting.

It does remove resource management (you pretty much will always have enough ammo to shoot something, I've only run out of ammo on veteran once[twice now that i beat it]) and there's really no horror elements. It's got a few shocking moments but they've all been replaced by quick time events that decapitate you randomly, which loses its emotional impact after the first time it happens.

The game also has a lot more of a "rail roading" feel. You just get brought along from place to place, and it doesn't have the sense of exploration any of the other games had (even RE4).
