Best Gifts Given/Recieved.

Postby epocalypse » 04 Jan 2011, 15:00

Well, we're closing out the holidays, and I think this is as good a time as any to analyze the exceptional gifts we may have given or received this year (and, if you don't have any for now, years past as well).

On the given, I've got two for this year:

-Beatles Rock Band on PS3 with 2 mics for my dad, which he has joyously told me is the most fun he's had with a Christmas present in the past 35 years.

-Nerf Maverick for my friend Jordan during our secret santa this year, which he stated, and I knew from investigation, couldn't have been a more perfect present, dues to certain other friends having had a nerf vendetta against him for a while.

On the received side:

-Bucky Balls. Man are those the most fun and potentially dangerous desk toy ever, cause those magnets are powerful and will wreak your computer if given a chance.

-Taiwanese Dragon pendant letter and bottle opener & taiwanese potter crackle charm. These were my gifts from the Secret Santa, given by my friend Michelle, and they were great. Very cool little doodads

-New Cuisinart for my kitchen, cause my parents are way to nice to me. Going to be great for making so many things, but top of my list is smoothies.

Well, how was the swag for you guys this year, and additionally, what makes a good gift?

Well, the iPad I got is quite epic, and by using the Droid X I got (for my Birthday, not C-Mas) I can get on the Internet with it anywhere... So... yeah, that stuff is nice...

My father's stock interests in apple and google thank you, sir.

How about the other side though, guys? Any gifts you're very proud of giving?

That reminds me, I love how in the secret Santa hustle video, Morgan by accident ends up giving the best gift.

I've always thought that the best gifts are the ones that somebody would really enjoy, but never buy for themselves, or really even consider having in the first place.

Like a few Christmases back, my mother got me a year's subscription for satellite radio. I never even considered getting it myself, but I freakin' loved that thing! Probably the best gift I've ever received.

Best given/received; wedding rings. The gift that keeps on giving! And taking... my sanity.

I heartily agree with this sentiment. Other than her wedding band, I'm quite proud of getting my wife some Hunter wellington (rubber) boots for this Christmas. They're useful (this is Vancouver after all), fashionable (don't laugh), and something she wouldn't have bought herself. AND she said she liked them a long time ago and I managed to remember it! Good times.

Best gift recieved was my surprise trip to NYC last year for my birthday from Wraith. I could live there so easy. So, so easy. If anyone wants to go in on an apartment in Manhattan, we just need like, 12 more people before we can afford rent ;)

Best gift given... I dunno... I think I really adored Wraith's face when I bought him an xbox 360. :) He was so excited.

Best gift received ... That's a hard one.

Last year my father got me a wallet, nice leather one, with the Love Kills Slow logo on it. I found it awesome because I adore how it looks, and I was also in the need of a bigger wallet at the time. I still love it to bits, partially because pretty much everyone I got it out infront of my friends they'd always jump onto it and say "I love this wallet!". Hahah, that was always so much fun to see!

This year ... I got a pair of thick, black and purple, arm warmers from my sister, and I adore how warm and snuggly they are, while also looking awesome.
I also got some make-up from my boyfriend's sister, three eyeliners, one black, one purple and one green, and some fancy eye glitter stuff. I barely ever get make-up so it felt awesome that someone actually thought of giving me some for once.

Best gifts that I've given ...
My mum's a coffee addict, and our coffee machine broke a few years back so she's been drinking instant coffee at home since then, so this year I got her a coffee machine.
I got a friend of the family a poster with a guy that looked like he was straight out of the 60s on it doing the "West side" sign with his hands with the text "I noticed you're gangster ... I'm pretty gangster myself!" written on it. He loved it, he was absolutely estatic, and everyone agreed that it was the PERFECT gift for him, since he usually takes the piss out of how "gangster" he is.
I also got my dad a cup with a picture of the Beatles on it, when I asked him what he thought of it he told me that it was a bloddy waste because it's gonna stay in that packet for the rest of his life, thought it was the shame to get it dirty. xD
I also got my sister a nice shirt, which she was happy about because she said it was perfect size, nice colour, perfect model for her, she liked the text on it, and she needed something colourful for her holiday to Thailand. I also got her two cups with Hope and Faith written on them with some fancy patterns on them too, and she was happy about them because she wanted a cup to keep at the place where she studies, but she only has huge cups at home.

I've always found that I've been good at finding those bits and bobs that people will useful, that they will enjoy and make them happy, and I've always found that to be great, I love nothing more than someone opening a gift that I've gotten for them and me seeing on their expression that I've hit home! =D

Given: box of 120 crayons for my girlfriend (she has a strange addiction to coloring) and a large nerf gun for my cousin.
Recieved: Socks meant for hunting in -20 degree weather (I don't hunt, just have cold feet)

MotorWaffle There are a lot of fun adult style coloring books (no not sex ones, though they have those). You should take hobbies she is into and see if you can find a coloring book dedicated to it.

I actually did look for a pirate or zombie coloring book, but the town I go to school in is incredibly small, so no luck finding one there, and I didn't have time to order one from anywhere before we had to leave for break. So I got the largest box of crayons that crayola produces.
I will keep looking for them for future gifts though.

On another note, on our wedding day my (soon-to-be) wife and I sent each other gifts via bridal party. Funnily enough we gave each other copies of Julia Child's Mastering The Art of French Cooking. We laughed.

best i've ever given was a few years ago, since money has been tight the last two years i havn't really been able to get more than a card and cheap clothes/shaving pack...
but 3-4 years ago i got my little brother (at the time he was 7 or 8) a psp with 9 games... cost something like $800...
he lost it in 6 months, but oh well.

best i've received well this years, since for the last 8 or so years i've just been given $50 or $50 gift certificates from family members and just trade the gift certificates in with people for actual $50...
but this year out of the blue one of my mates gave me my second malifaux crew the desolate and the soulless box set and a desolation engine to go with it...
as i'm just getting into this after it's rekindled my love of tabletop gaming having the second crew that fascinated me and one of the most awesome models in the line given to me out of nowhere was just great. spent about 9 hours painting the desolation engine and i still havn't done the stitching on the leg...

my camera was an awesome gift! Love that thing.

For my last birthday my Gf got me (among other, awesome things) a teddy bear holding the letter 'A'. Small, I know, but very cute. I take him everywhere.

For the same birthday WBAGNR got me LRR tshirts, which I didn't actually get until this xmas because of various reason (like both of us living on the other side of the world from the tshirts since they arrived in the UK from Canada).

The best gift I've ever received however was a ticket to see muse live in concert.

Actually all those gift were for my 18 bithday. What a great time that was.

Best gift I've given has to be a collaborative piece that a friend and I paid for but to which lots of people contributed for another friend's 18th last year. It was a bit poster with lots of pictures of his friends holding up signs saying 'I <3 Nick Wood' (his name). Awesome.

I remember that picture. I don't think I've ever seen an MMA fighter look so much more fangirly than a Twihard receiving an Edward Cullen dildo.

A couple of years ago, my parents got me a piece of original artwork used in the AD&D Ravenloft Supplement Children of the Night; Werebeasts.

It was awesome.

I guess the best gift I gave this year was a Warhammer giant to my girlfriend. It made her super happy. She thinks he's cute.

Best received: Warhammer empire flagellant warband. She knew exactly what I wanted :)
