The closest potential scenario I can think of is something like diverting a wayward asteroid, or some other cosmic scale event. And yet, the phrase "save the world" is so prevalent in our culture that it's become a supreme cliche. Bwuh?

We have a tendency to magnify the importance of our own achievements. It is a small leap to make to go from saving somethings that is very important to your personal view of the world and saving the
actual world. For all intents and purposes, they're essentially the same.
Besides, what's more interesting to read, saving 5th street from eternal night (just don't go to fifth street) or saving THE WORLD (oh shits son!)?
