Steve Jobs 1955-2011
Steve Jobs has died. Just put up on the BBC News website and it is on the front page of Apple's website.

Re: Steve Jobs Dies
Yeah, multiple sites are confirming this.
I'm...not sure how to feel. I wasn't his biggest fan by any stretch of the imagination, but at the same time I'm not really happy he's gone.

Re: Steve Jobs Dies
As I posted on Google+:
I've never been a fan of Apple products, and I'm a firm believer that the Apple business model of dumbing things down has significant negative side effects on the general consumer population, but even I cannot deny that Steve Jobs was a great man, who played a huge part in the shaping of technology as we have come to know it.
RIP Steve Jobs, you've earned the rest.

Re: Steve Jobs 1955-2011
Steve Jobs was, regardless of anything else, an absolute master of marketing. He understood the consumer mind perhaps better than anyone else in computing and electronics. In addition, the work that was fostered underneath him should not be underestimated; OSX (well, OK, I'm not keen on Lion, but before that) is a shining example of how to build a GUI, and not one which went unnoticed by others working in the field.
Was he perfect? By no means. But to argue he brought no good to his industry is insane, and in balance we're better off for his foresight and imagination.

After struggling with cancer for so long its sad to see him go. That really sucks, and only at 56 too. I wonder if Bill Gates will make a statement about him, his biggest competitor
Maybe I'll pick up some jeans and a black sweater to commemorate the guy

I still don' see apple and MS as competitors, hell Bill kept them afloat for quite a while.
Re: Steve Jobs 1955-2011
I don't mean it in a corporate competition, merely playful competition. Like you can't have one without the other, balance.
As somebody posted on facebook in response to "How did he die"
Bill Gates in the Death Note at Microsoft HQ
Hmm... celebs usually die in groups of 3 though right?
Steve Jobs
Bill Gates
Gabe Newell?

Re: Steve Jobs 1955-2011
I quote myself from about a half hour ago on this one:
"Even as someone who is somewhat-spoken as a non-fan of Apple, I found the news saddening as well. No matter what you have to say about Apple (fanboys or haters, whatever), you have to respect Jobs in some way. He's done some amazing things in the tech industry over the past 30 years."
And it's still sad to see him go. He's done some amazing things and made quite an impact as a result. He's certainly an icon to many in technology. Things will surely be different.

I second you on that alchemist, people on facebook brought up his company
WTF dude, I just responded with This isn't the place to drag this up, its the time to talk about the person, not the company. He created one of, if not the largest corporation in the world. A great man gone too soon.
edit:
Celebs, Steve Jobs isn't a celeb he is an evil mastermind that dominated the market of overpriced computers and phones. The puppet master that made people by a new iDevice when they came out every year.

Even if I somehow demonised Steve Jobs into a warped, Hitler-esque, Picasso painting of hate, I'd have to call Godwin is Dumb on it.
Even if Steve Jobs ate babies as a night-time snack, he still did some great things.

If it wasn't for Apple products, we wouldn't just be missing the iPad, iPhone, and MacBook. We'd be missing Pixar Animations.

Re: Steve Jobs 1955-2011
I think it is fair to say that one thing Jobs's Apple did really well was refine things. Yes, it's also fair to say some dumbing down occurred because of this; but the overall effect was streamlining.
Look at the iPod: No, not the first MP3 player, but the first one to get all the elements down. It needed a large storage capacity, because it wouldn't be useful without all your music. It needed a simple, easily intuitive interface. Hence the clickwheel. (Later the touch-wheel.) It needed an uncluttered display that instantly gave you the most crucial info, and it did that too.
That's true of so much of Jobs's time. They got some things dead wrong: Mobile Me didn't work for most. (I actually quite liked it, but I'm in the minority.) .Mac didn't work for almost anyone. We all remember the Mighty Mouse, right? So on, and so forth.
But for the most part, Jobs was brilliant at seeing how to boil things down to the essential elements, making them most accessible. That's a valuable lesson, even if I agree part of the lesson needs to be to learn when to use that design philosophy, and when not to.

HOLY CRAP. I just googled that.
We'd be without Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, WALL-E, Up and Toy Story 3. Up and Toy Story 3.
He's up there with buddha now. thank you man.

Oh, true! I'd forgotten about his role in seeing the potential of Pixar.

Re: Steve Jobs 1955-2011
You can say what you will about Apple and a lot of its products, but it has always been on the forefront of tech development. People can bitch all they want about Apple products, but the fact of the matter is they are great at what they are intended to do and all have sleek design. Thanks to Steve Jobs we have a whole different kind of market out there, both in terms of tech and in terms of design.
THE DUTCH!! THE DUTCH AGAIN!!!!!

I was glad to see how classy Bill Gates' tweets about this were. Not that I expected anything else, of course; I know he's an alright guy. A lot of his fans could learn a thing or two from him.
An engine that both consumes and creates malice.

Re: Steve Jobs 1955-2011
Surprised me when I went onto Google News. I didn't know he had any sort of issues that would cause this. Other than simply being alive, of course.
Anyhow, he certainly affected his industry and will be missed by many.

I like to believe that Jobs made my iPod personally.
Because I'm vain.
I'm not pleased that he's gone.
