Well, i will possibly piss off lots of you when I say that in my opinion Harry Potter is just garbage...I mean it is so predictable...and all the books are about the same. I´ve read the first 3 books and started the fourth one...The whole story´s just happening at the same place (most of the time), the characters are just black and white, it is a mix of a fairytale and a average fantasy book. The language is also quite...well, I can´t say poor, but surely it is no more than average. And there´s really no idea behind it all, I mean a good book should not be just the story, it should make you think...On the other hand, considering it as a book for children it is not that bad...Still when I want fairytales, I prefer Star Wars. And when I want a good book, I choose something by Kafka, Dostojevskij, Sartre or Èapek (you won´t know him, he was Czech). Besides I just can´t stand the author. Once she´s become famous she thinks she knows everything and interferes in stuff she´s got no idea about.
Well, that´s it. If you like it, go for it! Just told you my opinion.

I agree to an extent.
It's not garbage; it's a children's story.
Very few children's stories make you think. The most notable one is A Wrinkle in Time. The best thing about Harry Potter is that Rowling created an entire world which children love to read about. She reinvented some timeless mythological creatures (like giants) and gave them actual personalities and created a government system that explains why normal people don't witness magic.
I think she did a splendid job, but in the end, I am an adult and I don't like the style of children's story which Harry Potter turned out to be. The books have become darker, I will admit, but nothing as dark or grim as other books for children.
The first two books established the characters, but it seems now as if Rowling's not doing anything particularly outstanding with what she's created.
I can't think of a signature.
Well, yes. As I said, it is a fairytale. I would not say she created something new...it´s basically copying - she´s put like 10 different things together but nothing really new. The thing is that the characters stay the same (I mean that I can see no developement there) through all the story and that´s pretty boring. It would have been a great work if it changed as the readers grow - u start with the first harry potter when you´re like 10 and then the next books follow you as you get older and want something more demanding. It´s happening in a small way I guess, but it could be more significant. Rowling has already got enough money so she could try experimenting a little bit and stop writing the same old story all over again. The sales could be reduced then but the actual value of the book could increase. The question is, however, if Rowling would even be able to write something really "valuable".
