Re: Doctor Who
Well Missy said that she traveled up and down the Doctor's Timestream specifically to find people who died due to the Doctor. So from Missy and the Nethersphere's point of view, the events of this episode hadn't happened yet.

Re: Doctor Who
Is the implication then that every cyberman in this episode was someone from the Doctor's timestream?

Re: Doctor Who
I don't think so - the kid Mr. Pink sent back had nothing to do with the Doctor, and if you start playing six degrees of freedom pretty much the entire planet has at least tangentially interacted with the Doctor's timestream.

Re: Doctor Who
If the whole planet were told to think of The Doctor simultaneously in an aborted timeline, every human alive ~7 years ago would know The Doctor.

Re: Doctor Who
That timeline was eliminated though. That year when everyone thought of the doctor never happened.

Stephen Moffat: "Good-bye."

FFS, I'm not convinced we've seen the last of Danny Pink, what with Moffy in charge!

Yeah, agreed. I wasn't trying to claim that he likes characters to go away forever, just that he likes filming "goodbye" scenes.

Re: Doctor Who
Totally with you on that...
I just realized what Moffat's dream show would be for sating this compulsion of his: a stereotypical children's show where the presenters/hosts gather at the end of every episode and wave bye-bye to the viewers...

Re: Doctor Who
good episode though, clever moments, good way to have "real" Santa on DrWho without ruining the shows reputation.
Re: Doctor Who
I liked the banter between the Doctor and Clara. I liked the old version of Clara and thought that was a great way for a companion to leave, and was honestly a little sorry with how it played out as a result. Like PlasmaCow, I enjoyed the method of having Santa in a Christmas episode. I liked Shona, and I would enjoy having her return.
I disliked the long Danny Pink goodbye scene. I disliked the way that Moffat pretended that he was okay with there being female scientists only to reveal that they were really just worked in shops and the like. I disliked that Shona's entire motivation for everything was to get over a man. I disliked that Clara's entire goodbye scene at the end was wasted.
I wish the Doctor's facehugger location had been blue instead of red so that we could pretend it was Metebelis III.

At last, Moffat has done a good Christmas special.
It wasn't quite Christmas Invasion, but I really liked it.

Re: Doctor Who
I personally didn't notice this suggested sexism.
The man died.
The man died.
Re: Doctor Who
True enough. I don't think this episode by itself is enough evidence to shout "Sexism!" It's just part of a pattern when Moffat writes episodes (at least since he no longer had a boss) and I wish the pattern would change.

I quite liked the reverse Christmass Carol one.

Confirmation bias - if you expect it you will find it.
In this case, you have to ignore the counter examples of female scientists scripted before.(Like the one killed in the episode before this)
Personally I don't see evidence Moffat is Sexist. He has written tones of female characters with agency and I don't think of any pattern to positions they haven't been portrayed in.
Now you can claim flaws elsewhere. Perhaps Rivers too much of a Mary Sue, some others might seem to shouty, Coupling fell into the "smart woman with dumb men" comedy troupe often etc.
But not all witting flaws are the result of sexism.
And while I wouldn't say RTD was sexist either, if you compare his companions to SM, those ones are far more often just being "dragged along" with the doctor, occasionally being useful. More often SM ones are demanding their adventures fit around their real lives too.
Id also say Moffat seems to have been working towards a female doctor for awhile too - the first Who story he wrote (The parody "curse of the fatal death", aside from being hilarious and worth seaking out on youtube, had a female regeneration). He then confirmed it was possible in "Night of the Doctor" and has gone on record recently saying
""There easily could be a female Doctor. I think the next time might be a female Doctor. I don't see why not. I think it's good to do that.""
Not that that proves he isn't sexist, but I think it will take a fair bit of evidence to prove he is.

Re: Doctor Who
Even without being sexist, he still has these boxes of what he believes makes a "strong female character", and seems to find it difficult to write outside that (the "River Song" character we've seen several times over) without falling back on the same old stereotypes and societal conventions for female characters we see elsewhere.

Re: Doctor Who
The Christmas episode wasnt bad, which sadly puts it in the top 5 episodes of the past four years.
Seriously it wasnt a good episode but the bar has been set so low, how sad is that for such a great series.

Re: Doctor Who
I liked the episode and think it's my joint second most favourite Christmas episode of Doctor Who.
Though I didn't really follow it when they were on the sleigh. I was wondering what was going on. A sort of fizzle out.

An internet and fandom convention friend of mine, who has some significant association with a science fiction franchise, had some things to say about Moffat recently.

Re: Doctor Who
I have some great tips for Moffat for writing quality female characters.
Step one: Write a Really strong character with logical motivations and flaws.
Step two: instead of giving that character the name Robert or William, name them Emily or Tara.
Step three: Hire a female actor to play the role.
Step four: DONT CHANGE THE CHARACTER to try to make it "more female"
