I filmed some things we did in Boston at PAX East using my iPhone.

See?

Yes, that is the internet’s Woody Tondorf near the middle, there. We met up with him and hung out for a bit, because he happened to be in Boston at the time. We even acted in something for him. When that comes out, we’ll be sure to link you to it!

Rejected ENN – April 14, 2010
April 14th, 2010

After a couple weeks off, in which–because we were writing entirely collaboratively–we did not generate any rejected ENN stories, the feature is back … and with a vengeance.

For those new to the party, every week, Paul, Graham, Kathleen and I get together to write ENN. Over the week, each of us actually writes stories separately, then we commune on Fridays to choose what to use, what to revise, etc. Sometimes the stories we throw out aren’t very good; other times, they are too obscure for a wider audience. Even so, sometimes very good stories have to be rejected because there is just not enough space for them in the episode. Here are several such stories from this week’s episode:

99 Red Balloons

Heavy Rain star Pascal Langdale has founded his own motion capture studio to protect fellow performers from having to say “Jason” ever again.

Some Friend You Are

Blizzard is offering a new mount to players who participate in its WOW Recruit a Friend program, stating that as interest in the initiatve falls off, new nuggets of online crack are required to draw more people into their diabolical skinner box.

Define “Baller”

Def Jam Rapstar will be released this fall, and will feature explanations for the slang and terminology used in the rap lyrics, which will enable every white kid from Salt Lake City to Topeka to call himself an O.G. Thug by Christmas.

Can’t Stop the Rock

Luxury phone maker Mobiado has released a concept phone carved out of a solid piece of marble. While making a portable device out of a large chunk of rock may seem counterintuitive, the company feels that critics are overlooking the underserved “Sisyphus-on-the-go” demographic.

MGS: Product Walker (Kathleen’s take on it)

For the record, the sponsorship joke in this episode came about because I wrote three different versions of the same story, each with a different joke. I wasn’t sure which was funnier, so I just submitted all of them, and this inspired the “ENN sells out” angle for this week’s episode. Kathleen ALSO submitted her own story based on the same news stories, which didn’t work for the sponsorship joke because it followed a very different format. That said, I think it’s funnier than mine by itself :P.

Hideo Kojima has justified the heavy product placement in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, by saying that “Snake seeing a Pepsi Max in the jungle is a way to surprise players.” Games industry analysts with thesauruses were quick to point out that other words for “surprise” are “bewilder” “dumbfound” and “ruin the immersive experience of”, so Kojima may have simply been the victim of bad translation.

News Post: Lots to Talk About

So, in my blog post yesterday I mentioned the fact that I’d have a substantial announcement to make today. Well, that has quickly turned into three announcements, so I may as well throw them all in here.

First off, here’s the thing I had planned to announce: LRR will be at w00tstock in Seattle and Portland in May. If you’re active on the forums, or noticed our little Twitter widget in the sidebar there, or follow Paul & Storm, you probably already know this, but the announcement had to be made official. Now it is.

While the crew was at PAX East, we had a very nice chat with Wil Wheaton and Misters Paul and Storm, and they invited us to be a part of this awesome show. Since we’d pretty much planned to attend as audience members anyhow, we jumped at this opportunity. We haven’t hammered out full details yet, but we’ll be showing a couple of videos and hanging around in person. Other guests and performers at the shows include Paul & Storm, Wil Wheaton, Adam Savage, Molly Lewis, John Roderick, Stephen “Stepto” Toulouse (who just got the cutest damned puppy I’ve ever seen), and Frayn Masters. This should be one hell of a show, so if you can make it to one, don’t miss out. (And buy your tickets soon! They WILL sell out.)

Secondly, you may have noticed our very special stinger after the video yesterday.  Well, she said yes. Congratulations to forum members Wraith and TheRocketSiobhan on your engagement!

Our final news item of the day is one you’re probably aware of if you’ve been on our forums or are a frequent user of The Escapist.  As of this morning, the big E has rolled out a new subscription program called “The Escapist Publisher’s Club”.  For $20 a year, you can now subscribe to The Escapist and gain access to special perks and premium content, including high quality and mobile video playback, behind-the-scenes features, and ad-free browsing. If you’re not interested in subscribing, don’t worry: none of The Escapist’s free content has been rolled into this program, only bonus features. If you’re on the fence, though, just remember that your support of The Escapist benefits us and our content in a very real and effective way.

That’s all for this week!

And with this update, commodoreHUSTLE makes its triumphant debut on The Escapist.

In the interest of full disclosure, I do take long showers. Very long.

This video was a bit of an experiment for the lot of us. We hadn’t really planned on filming a full video at the con, but Graham wrote this script on the plane to Boston to kill time. We hadn’t brought the big camera with us (it’s risky to transport stuff like that, and Delta was charging $25 for every piece of checked luggage), but G had purchased a Canon Rebel T2i to document the trip with, and it just so happens that this new camera also shoots HD video. Such was the genesis of this video.

Oh, by the way, I’ll be posting a pretty substantial news item/announcement on this blog tomorrow, so I’d advise you to check back.

Cheers!
